How to Prep for your Recovery from Plastic Surgery

How to Prep for your Recovery from Plastic Surgery

After having plastic surgery, you may be unable to do certain things for yourself. In many cases, you will need to spend a lot of time resting and you may have some pain and discomfort. Here are some things you can do before even having surgery to help prep for your recovery from plastic surgery.

Arrange for Childcare

If you have children and you are normally their primary caretaker, you will want to arrange for childcare well in advance. If your children attend school, who will be taking them to and from school and who will be taking care of them once they attend school? You will be in a state of recovery and likely not able to take care of your kids in teh capacity you normally might, so make sure to plan this out ahead of time.

Healthy Food Options

Another consideration after surgery is what you are going to eat. After surgery, you will want to maintain a healthy diet to help aid your body in the healing process. You will not be in a great position to cook for yourself for a while during recovery. So, you can prepare for recovery by stocking up on some healthy freezer meals or coordinating with friends and family on food they can bring over for you after surgery.

Comfortable Clothing

After surgery, you will want comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. Take into account what body part you are having surgery on, and make sure you have clothing that will work for this post surgery. You do not want clothing that is tight and will rub on any incisions as they try to heal. Lay out comfortable clothes ahead of time or buy some so they are ready for you at home after surgery.

Set Up Your Space

Have you decided to recover in your home, a hotel, or AirBnb? Whatever you have decided, you will want to prepare the space you plan to heal in before surgery. This may be a couch, a comfy armchair, or a bed. Pick a space that is close to the bathroom and avoid stairs if at all possible. Clear the area from any clutter to decrease the likelihood of any falls after surgery. Prepare a water bottle so you can stay hydrated after surgery.

Have a Plan

One of the biggest things you can do for yourself in prepping for your recovery is having a plan. Decide on how you are going to get to the surgery center and how you are going to get home. Where do you want to recover? While some people choose to recover in the comfort of their own homes, others prefer staying in an AirBnb or a hotel. Who is going to take care of you after surgery? If you have kids, it may be difficult for your partner to take care of you and the children. Even if you don't have kids, your designated caretaker may have to work and taking care of you may not be feasible. Would you feel more comfortable with someone taking care of you that has a medical background?  Who will you contact if you are experiencing a concerning side effect or symptom?

Follow these tips to prep for your recovery. The most important tip is having a plan so you know where you are going, how you are getting there, and what you plan to do in case of any emergency post-op.
