Post Op Dizziness
Post Op Dizziness
After having a major surgery, you may experience post-op dizziness. Read on to find out more about post-op dizziness and things you can do to help with it!
Side Effect
Post-op dizziness can be a side effect from anesthesia, the medicine used to put you asleep during surgery. The IV medications you may be given during surgery can also cause dizziness after the fact. This symptom is a common side effect that may occur after major surgery. It usually gets better and goes away within the first 12 to 24 hours after surgery.
It Can be Dangerous
While dizziness in itself is not inherently bad, it can be dangerous if not handled correctly or taken seriously. Dizziness can cause falls that may cause damage to the body part that was operated on or even damage to another area. Dizziness is a common side effect that you do not need to be scared of, but it does need to be handled properly to ensure you stay as safe as possible post-operatively.
What to Do
If you are experiencing post-op dizziness, there are a couple of things you can do. When getting out of bed, move slowly after surgery. Try sitting up for a few minutes before standing up. This will give your body some time to adjust to this new position and what it feels like to be upright. If you do feel dizzy, sit down or lie down to prevent a fall. Do not try to push through the dizziness and walk across the room.
Have Someone With You
Post-op dizziness is one of many reasons you should have someone with you for at least the first 24 hours after surgery. The side effects from the medications and being put to sleep can make dizziness very common post-op. To handle this symptom as safely as possible, make sure someone is with you for at least the first 24 hours after surgery. This way, if you do get dizzy, someone is there to help assist you. If you are all alone and you get dizzy, the dizziness may come on too suddenly for you to prevent a fall and it may cause damage to the surgical site or another part of your body. Stay as safe as possible by having someone with you after surgery to assist with any post-op dizziness that may occur.
